What if time were not counted, but silently experienced?
Inspired by the weightless motion of celestial bodies, COSMO is a journey through horological ingenuity, where time becomes an experience in itself.
Enclosed within a dome of hand-blown Murano glass, it turns upon itself once every sidereal day, mirroring its owner’s resting heartbeat for 406 days on a single wind, sustained by La Vallée’s new patent-pending transmission system.
Driven by its pursuit of innovation, La Vallée decided to set out the creation of a new timepiece that upholds the pioneering spirit of the M30TP project. Just two essential parameters were set as milestones for its development: a large, low-frequency escapement positioned at the centre above the main barrel, and an exceptionally long power reserve.
Luciano Sasso has the task to conceive, design and develop this new innovative timepiece.
Head of Research and Development in La Vallée, fourth generation of a family of clockmakers, inventors and designers, Luciano is endowed with a particular insight into mechanics, geometry and logic mathematics, that he developed from an early age along with a great curiosity and a passion for making, understanding and inventing.
Starting from a technical training through engineering, Luciano experiments, invents and creates mechanical solutions never taken for granted and often out of the ordinary, questioning what is commonly accepted as the "state of the art".
His ability to develop mechanisms that achieve multiple functions with the fewest possible components, and to integrate these functions into each component’s geometry, led him once again to explore the principle of eccentric gears. The result is an exceptionally innovative creation — and another La Vallée patent now pending.

The entire development of COSMO is inspired by the weightless motion of celestial bodies — planets, stars, and galaxies — gliding effortlessly through the vastness of space. Every aspect of COSMO, from design and engineering to aesthetic vision and material selection, has been purposefully conceived to evoke the stillness and fluid harmony of the universe, and convey this through the user experience.
The sense of weightlessness is achieved by envisioning the main body of the COSMO mechanism suspended within its hand-blown Murano glass dome, which portrays the celestial sphere, and by elevating the escapement — crowned by its large, low-frequency balance wheel — like a free celestial body at the heart of this mechanical universe.
From timekeeping to calendar and astronomical indications, the concept of relative motion defines the entire COSMO timepiece. Time is revealed through the harmonious interaction of moving components — an elegant interplay that reflects the differing velocities of planets in their orbits, offering a poetic vision of time as relationship rather than mere measure.
A red index rotates around the central escapement to indicate the minutes, while the entire movement completes a full rotation on its axis every sidereal day, which is 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds long. The hour and month rings also rotate, albeit at a different speed, to ensure that the correct indication always aligns precisely with their
indexes.
Finally, all astronomical information is conveyed through the superimposition of multiple rotating elements, with the gold-plated Sun hand completing one full revolution every 24 hours. Through this celestial interplay, COSMO reveals the progression of twilight, the times of sunrise and sunset, the duration of dawn and dusk, and the zodiac signs.
COSMO does not simply measure time — it lets it dance, silently, in perfect harmony with the universe that inspires it.

Within the ingenuity of its pure mechanics there is a micro-universe to discover. Wind the Cosmo and let it show you a compendium of calendar and astronomical information narrated over its 406-day power reserve.
The COSMO movement is a fully mechanical body powered by a single mainspring and weighing more than 16 kilograms.
It completes one full rotation every 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4 seconds, driving its large escapement and delivering a range of astronomical indications with an exceptional 406-day power reserve per full wind.
This remarkable autonomy is made possible by La Vallée’s innovative transmission system (patent pending), which is composed of just two eccentric gears capable of transferring energy directly from the mainspring to the escapement in a highly consistent and efficient manner.
With the addition of a few extra parts, the same system also functions as a stopwork mechanism.
The same components drive three power reserve indicators, designed to resemble small floating planets with green circular areas. These indicators travel along the 406-day power reserve arc and, when only 50 days of power remain, they begin to turn revealing a red area — a subtle celestial signal that the timepiece requires winding.
COSMO’s escapement is a compendium of horological brilliance: entirely redesigned and optimised for energy efficiency, it is powered by a flexure-based remontoire and drives a large, low-frequency balance wheel with a trilobe Delta-T regulating system, magnetically suspended.
To ensure accuracy throughout the 406-day power reserve period, the huge 70mm, 60 gram weight balance wheel is guided only laterally by two rubies while a magnetic suspension system comprising two shielded opposing magnets holds the entire weight and stabilises the vertical position.
The magnetic field opposition, in conjunction with the special shield, ensures an almost zero residual field near the sensitive escapement components.
Rather than trying to minimise the effects of individual factors such as the hair spring, balance expansion and oil viscosity, the trilobe balance can easily be adjusted (just by turning the spokes) to completely compensate these combined negative effects on timekeeping.
The trilobe invar ring seats on the inner spokes, made from a different metal, over 3 ruby spheres, making possible to easily adjust the position between them. With temperature rise, the 3 inner spokes expand more than the invar ring, deforming it into a shape where its lobes go inwards, counteracting the thermal effect.
COSMO’s escapement is powered by a flexure-based one-minute remontoire which releases equally distributed batches of energy to the escapement. It is specifically designed for an utmost reduction of energy losses and parts.
The entire system consists in the remontoire spring an only one additional component: the flexure-based star.
The pallet fork is the element that transfers energy from the escape wheel to the balance wheel, keeping it oscillating. The more efficient this transfer is, the less energy is required overall, granting a longer power reserve.
A redesigned pallet fork integrating the impulse and safety action in a single layer made possible to work with the energy saving ideal geometry of an also redesigned escapement wheel.
As the universe, with its multitude of objects to be discovered, COSMO has some hidden unique features to be discovered. Below the glass dome lies a knob designed with the same multifunctional approach adopted in every new mechanism, serves three functions:
• When turned to the left it stops the escapement, and securely locks the remontoire and balance wheel during transport.
• When from the left position it is turned to the center position, it serves as starting the escapement and the remontoire.
• When turned to the right magnetically rises the whole escapement assembly until touching the glass dome, activating the acoustic beat amplifier function.
Designed to immerse its owner in a state of mind that resonates with the peaceful rhythm of the universe, La Vallée offers a unique experience through a profound and authentic feat of personalization: COSMO’s escapement can be designed to beat at the frequency of your resting heart, forging an intimate connection between you and your timepiece.
To achieve this, the escapement’s architecture has been specially conceived to allow—at the owner’s request—its elevation by one millimetre, so that it touches the inner surface of the Murano glass, amplifying its ticking tenfold and making the resting heartbeat frequency audible through the dome.
More than an innovative instrument of time, COSMO becomes a reflection of the individual’s inner harmony within the boundless cosmos.
Inspired by the motion of the planets and stars in the universe Cosmo shows the passage of stars above your country, the time of sunrise and sunset, the duration of dusk and dawn and the current zodiac sign.
La Vallée offers you the unique opportunity to customise the astrolabe to display the astronomical phenomena of your chosen city. Even your favourite star can be depicted on the crystal, making your timepiece uniquely yours
